Shadow cannot exist without light, good cannot exist without evil and death cannot exist without life. This idea is a continuation of my thoughts from “The varying Perspectives of Identity.” To show the intriguing existence of both the good and bad, I created a conceptual lamp which emulates this contrast. This is represented in the colour, shape and medium.

The lamp is circular to mimic the shape of the earth, suggesting that this is a ‘global’ phenomenon. This is further emphasized by the shadows of eight different silhouettes. The playful use of polystyrene (styrofoam) is intentional as the main material; it is used for insulation, packaging and can also be an energy source as heat is created when recycled. However, it is non-biodegradable, causes air pollution and health concerns.  My inspiration for creating my first design piece, was sparked by my sudden exposure to furniture and lighting design while helping to renovate my house.
