While doing an artist study on Georgia O’Keeffe at the School of the Arts Institue of Chicago, I was intrigued not only by the meaning behind her pieces and how she found beauty in the dead and managed to create such smooth brushstrokes. I was eager to master this technique and used O’Keeffe’s, “Cow’s skull with Calico Roses,” as my reference before adding my own nuance. Instead of the skull of a cow and abiding to a monochromatic colour scheme, I painted the skull of a mythical dragon, (as it was the year of the dragon) and the calico roses in pastel colours of shades of orange-yellow pastel colour to also represent the colours of the year 2012.
